The purpose of this petition is to set in motion the steps to cease the minting of the penny. The penny costs twice as much to make compared to its face value. It is estimated that over $60M per year would be saved if the penny was eliminated.
A number of countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain, and Canada have already dropped their lowest-denominated coins, without dire consequences.
