The CBO projects that by 2025 the entire budget of the federal government of the US will be spent on exactly 4 things: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the interest on our debt. The costs of these programs have grown exponentially over time, and are unsustainable without significant changes.
The American people need and deserve bipartisan action to avert this impending fiscal catastrophe. There are several measures that would make a real dent: raising taxes, modestly cutting benefits, slowly raising the retirement age, encouraging private savings, etc. Several scholars and legislators have studied the issue and made specific, workable template plans.
The specifics of what to do can and should be worked out by Congress. But we must act, and we must act NOW!
