Education improves the lives of individual citizens, their communities, states and the country as a whole. Unfortunately, the cost of higher education has grown substantially without any assurance of employment following completion of a degree. Despite their diplomas, millions remain unemployed while burdened with student loan debt. The Tax Relief Act of 2010 offered only $2,500 per year of deductible student loan interest. Also, the Tax Relief Act of 2010 only extended student loan interest deduction through 2012. Now graduates will only be able to deduct interest during the first 60 months of their repayment period. The cap on student loan interest deduction for only 60 months should be replaced with legislation making student loan payments 100% tax deductible throughout repayment.
