United States is #1 in incarceration: 707/100,000 prisoners per population.
We can not get rid of crime, but we can punish convicted non-violent criminals in a way that benefits society as a whole.
Have them do community service, work for charities, and other activities that society actually benefits from.
Sending non-violent criminals to jail creates more problem, because when they leave, most often they lose the opportunity to have a normal life. We would spend money to keep them locked up for years, in a place riddled with rape, and expect them to behave like normal human beings when they leave? Does this sound logical to anyone? We should reform, not bury. We should uplift, not cast down.
We are spending to much money as is on other programs, and we believe it is time to fix it.
