The United States Pledge of Allegiance has been recited by students in American schools for over a century, but was officially recognized by Congress as a part of the Flag Code in 1942.
It was not until 1954 that, at the behest of the Catholic Knights of Columbus, a chaplain in the Sons of the American Revolution and a Presbyterian Pastor, Congress amended the Pledge to include the words "Under God".
Including this phrase in a national pledge recited by schoolchildren daily not only violates the Constitution's guarantee of the separation of Church and State, it directly contradicts the founding father's views towards the values of this country. We are a nation of inclusion, and no officially recognized pledge should limit itself to recognition of one religious worldview, or any at all.
