George Washington said, “If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” In the U.S., the cornerstone of free speech begins with being counted as citizens through our vote. However as recent elections have shown, technical difficulties have posed serious threats to our Democracy. Lines of voters standing for hours on end. Delays in counting votes. Such scenes lead many Americans to the sad choice of jeopardizing jobs, obligations, their livelihood just to make their vote count. No citizen should have to choose between doing their duty as a citizen, and their duty as a person. America honors so many good folks - Veterans, MLK, Labor - with days off. Why not honor the group to which we all belong: the American Voter.
