Email, instant messaging and social media are quickly replacing the physical post and other non-digital forms of communication. The White House and our leaders in Congress need to work with industry to enshrine our first and fourth amendment rights.
Being worried that someone might read your private emails makes it an unreliable platform, whether that is stored locally on your hard drive or digitally in the cloud, it is your private mail and should be protected. This includes all forms of online communication.
Privacy and anonymity is fundamentally important to free speech. Here in the United States there is less fear of reprisal, but that is not and may not always be the case. Whenever there is room for ambiguity, someone will always push the extremes and challenge convention.
