Work to introduce legislation to eliminate the deduction for home mortgage interest.

Created by J.G. on March 03, 2013

The President should work to have legislation introduced that would eliminate the federal income tax deduction for home mortgages over time.
The elimination would occur over a period of 10 years at a rate of 10 percent a year.
The law would begin to be implemented after a reasonable period of time, such as the number of years in length of the average mortgage.
For example, assuming the legislation were enacted in 2014 and the average length of a mortgage was determined to be 7 years, then starting in 2021 only 90 percent of mortgage interest would qualify for deduction from income taxes. In 2022, 80 percent would be eligible. In 2023, 70 percent. etc.
Rationale - It is not fair that those who cannot afford or do not want to own a home should subsidize through the tax system those who do.
