work with national Press to establish limits on the publicity given to mass murder suspects, increase focus on victims

Created by M.W. on December 16, 2012

GOAL: For Obama Administration to work with the Press to set nat'l standards in Media to limit publicity given to suspects of mass violence, and conversely to emphasize and honor the lives of the victims. Not to in any way infringe upon Freedom of the Press, but to set standards to strengthen the Common Good and to make clear our values as a nation.

In wake of the recent tragedy, it's time to examine how our country portrays horrific events in the media. Sadly, pictures of suspects and descriptions of "shy, smart, nice kid" perpetrators make for a good story. And sadly, the allure of headlining such a story and becoming famous can motivate certain unstable individuals to commit unspeakable crimes.

Inspired by The Daily Herald's "refusal to add to CO theater suspect's fame" (20 July 2012)
