A 2008 Nature editorial calls the US biosolids program "an institutional failure spanning more than three decades." Yet EPA's Office of Water continues to ignore warnings by the National Academy of Sciences, the Cornell Waste Management Institute, the Sierra Club, dozens of other health, farm, and environmental organizations, its own scientists-all emphasizing the hazards of the current sludge policies. Sewage sludge is a complex mixture of antibiotic resistant pathogens,endocrine disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, unregulated metals, and other industrial wastes, some highly toxic and persistent. Spreading sludge on land has sickened people, killed live stock, polluted water, and degraded healthy soil. Biosolids do not belong on the land where we grow our food or graze our animals.
