Certain Members of Congress are actively blocking the passage of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act (STOCK). Among them are wealthy members of congress who stand to gain financially in the absence of such a law. President Obama should make a statement of public support for the STOCK act, and work to ensure that it is passed immediately.
President Obama should insist that the law hold members of the House and Senate to the same standards of business ethics that apply to every american regarding trading on privileged information. Why should Members of Congress be able to use their access to non-public information to make financial decisions when such behavior would result in fines or jail time for average Americans?
