The federal government needs to take decisive action to significantly reduce the number of people killed by firearms in the United States. Every year in the US about 30,000 people are killed by firearms. Many people attribute these suicides (about 60% of firearm-deaths), homicides (about 40%) and accidents (less than 2%) to natural human behavior. This is not true. In 2008, the US Center for Disease Control recorded 31,593 firearm-related deaths. In the same year, British authorities reported a total of 42 firearm deaths.
If federal laws are passed requiring mental health evaluations, more thorough background checks and safety courses for any citizen who wishes to own a firearm many of these unnecessary and tragic deaths can be prevented.
