The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women under the law. The ERA was originally written by Alice Paul and, in 1923, it was introduced in the Congress for the first time. In 1972, it passed both houses of Congress and went to the state legislatures for ratification.
Making sure that women are considered equally protected under the Constitution is imperative. As of today, 35 states individually have passed their own Equal Rights Amendments to protect women legally. 3 more states are needed to make 38 and for the amendment to be ratified to the U.S. Constitution.
