We Petition for the State of South Carolina and ask that they change the name of "Calhoun" St. to "Emanuel" St.

Created by A.C. on June 25, 2015

John C Calhoun was a known advocate of pro-slavery and white supremacy. In light of recent events on June 17th, 2015. In which a mass shooting was carried out by a white supremacist assailant on innocent people due to the color of their skin at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. We the people of the United States of America petition the state of South Carolina to change the name of the street where The historical church is located from "Calhoun" st. To "Emanuel" st. In memory of the 9 victims who tragically lost their lives. We believe that people of color should not have to be made to walk on streets that are honoring a man who fought to keep them subjected to slavery. This specific location deserves to be preserved more so and honored not only by the state but also in history.
