Stop for-profit or private sector employers from exploiting the internship system for free labor. Require all for-profit employers to either offer course credit or pay interns the minimum hourly state wage.
The number of unpaid internships is skyrocketing as employers are relying more on interns instead of hiring employees. And employers are under no obligation to hire interns once the internship has ended. This undercuts the hiring process for millions of unemployed and underemployed experienced professionals. It also places an undue financial burden on interns and recent college graduates who are being asked to forgo the minimum wage for work experience.
